#HopefulHippies #KEEPITBRIGHT STAND UP T-Shirt Competition

November 2nd, 2016 / 0 comments / Craig

Miley Cyrus treated teens from My Friend’s Place — a Los Angeles-area center that assists homeless youth — to a special day on The Voice set.

The excited group sported Happy Hippie T-shirts as they toured the backstage, took turns sitting in the famous red judge’s seats and watched a taping of the show. They also got a chance to sit down with the Season 11 coach to discuss the importance of music in their lives and the issues that they face as homeless teens.

“On The Voice I’ve heard so many people’s stories now,” says Cyrus in a clip shared exclusively with PEOPLE. “To be able to have the spotlight on people that don’t usually have the spotlight on them is why I’m here and why it’s really important for y’all to be here and to just see who’s on that stage.”

How old are you?

I just turned 19 in May.

Where were you born and where do you live now?

I was born in the Hunan province of China and now I live near Ann Arbor, Michigan.

How would you describe yourself?

Passionate, funny, creative, determined.

What do you do for a living /what are you studying in school?

I work at my school’s LGBTQ resource center where I facilitate trainings around LGBTQ identities and ways to be a better ally. Right now, I’m hoping to study film. I really want to write and direct movies and television programs. I think it’s such a great medium for storytelling.

What do you do in your free time?

I write. A lot. Like, seriously. I’m not really big on poetry, but I write a lot of short stories, fan fiction, ideas for short films. There are days where I’ll spend hours just typing away, off in my own world. It’s so liberating and so much fun.

Miley Cyrus: ‘You Can Just Be Whatever You Want to Be’

It doesn’t take much to summon a whirlwind of words from Miley Cyrus, who answers every question with a torrent. She darts from memories of football games in Nashville to pop star etiquette to how America is obsessed with sex—all so quickly that some words are hard to distinguish. (Except the profanity, which she uses at roughly the same rate teens use emoji.) Occasionally she slows, camping up her light Nashville drawl to mock the conservative politicians who are at odds with her new social-justice mission: teaching America that there’s more to gender than deciding someone is a girl or boy in the delivery room—and supporting people across the gender spectrum.

Miley Cyrus has gone behind the camera lens to draw attention to issues affecting transgender and non-binary people.

The 22-year-old singer, who recently revealed her bisexuality, has joined forces with popular photo-sharing application, Instagram, to launch a series of portraits focused on the LGBT community.

With each picture set to be taken by the American star over the next two weeks, the series that has been titled #instapride and will raise awareness for the her charity, the Happy Hippie Foundation.

The first person to be featured was 19-year-old Leo Sheng from Michigan, who openly discussed his transition from female to male.

‘I can’t remember the last time I’ve been in a room with so much love, pride and respect for everyone’s journeys,’ he said in a caption. ‘I hope that my portrait can inspire those who have the ability to share their own stories to find their voices.

‘If there’s anything that the last few years have taught me, it’s that living an unapologetic existence is the most freeing thing you can do.’

Meanwhile, Miley – who posed naked alongside her pet pig Bubba Sue for the latest issue of Paper magazine – told the publication earlier this month that considers her own sexuality and gender identification as ‘fluid’.

‘I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age,’ she explained. ‘Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult – anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.’

Opening up about her sexuality in the candid interview, the chart-topper noted that because she doesn’t ‘relate to being a boy or a girl’, she doesn’t need her partner relate to being a boy or girl either.

She also recalled being aged 14 when she first told her mother Tish that she ‘admire[s] women in a different way’.

In May, Miley officially announced the launch of the Happy Hippie Foundation, a non-profit she founded, which is dedicated to fighting injustice facing homeless and LGBT youth.

The organization, which Miley discusses in detail in Paper’s ‘Use your voice’ issue, offers kids and teens art and animal therapies as a form of treatment as well as support.
