ALMA recently opened up to People about her rise to fame and collaborating with Miley Cyrus.
ALMA has cowritten multiple hits with Cyrus, including the riotous “Mother’s Daughter,” divorce kiss-off “Slide Away” and the latest Charlie’s Angels theme, “Don’t Call Me Angel” (with Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey).
“We met at a party and she was like, ‘Hey, your album is super cool,’ and I was just like, ‘Yep. You’re Miley Cyrus and you’re super cool too.’ I’ve always been a Miley fan and I love powerful, female artist who does what the f— they want to do — and she’s like queen of that,” ALMA says.
The artists hit it off immediately after they met.
“Literally, the next day we were in the studio and we were making music and actually, the first song we did together was ‘Slide Away.’ I feel like we were in the same place in life, like we had same things in our head and it was a connection we both really needed,” ALMA says. “It was just so easy to write all of the songs. It was like we’re not trying much — they just came. We both have the same energy: It’s just very fast and very real and very honest.”
Towards the end of last month (25th April), Miley Cyrus appeared as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live: Live at Home. Rather than perform a new single or previous hit, Miley chose to perform one of her favourite songs, delivering her rendition of ‘Wish You Were Here’ by Pink Floyd.
In the week of 9th May 2020, Wish You Were Here appeared in – and peaked in – 2 different Billboard charts.
• On the Rock Digital Song Sales chart, the song re-entered and peaked at #6 – their only top 10 song on this chart. It is only their third song to appear on this chart.
• On the Hot Rock Songs chart – which blends sales, streams & radio play – it appeared for the first time ever, debuting at #10 and peaking the following week at #9.
It was also their top song in the United States on YouTube over the past 28 days.

ALMA recently caught up with Idolator & ReadDork to talk about new music and life in quarantine, where she was asked about her work with Miley Cyrus. Check out what she said below.
As well as writing your own amazing songs, you’re also a highly sought-after songwriter in LA. How did you connect with Miley Cyrus? I’m obsessed with “Mother’s Daughter.”
Thank you so much. We actually met at a party and we really clicked. We were just like, “Wow, we’re literally the same person but we come from so different backgrounds.” The next day we were in the studio. It was so simple. It was just like, “I love you.” “Okay, I love you too.” It was just like a crazy connection. We had the same energy and same kind of craziness. The first track we did was actually “Slide Away.” It was literally the first track we did together ever. We were both in the same situation in life, I think. It was easy to talk with her and I feel like it was easy for her to talk with me too. We had so much fun in the studio.
You also did that Charlie’s Angels song. What was that like?
It was the same time we were working on Miley’s album. I think Ariana Grande hit up Miley and then Miley asked me to be a part of it. I was just like, “Oh, yes, thank you, I will.” It was huge for me. Ariana Grande and then also Lana Del Rey. Like, what the hell? They’re the biggest artists in the world right now. It was huge for me and I’m very honored that they wanted to take a chance on this young songwriter.
Having helped pen some tracks for two of Miley Cyrus’ EPs, including the roaring ‘Mothers Daughter’ and heartbreaking ‘Slide Away’, it was in these sessions that Alma found some more helping words.
“I was making my album at the same time when we made her EP,” Alma says. “And she was like, ‘You’ve got to do your own thing’, and she loved the records that I love. She was always telling me that ‘this needs to be the single, I know this is probably never gonna go to the charts, but fuck it because it’s you!'”
The single Miley was referring to was ‘LA Money’, perhaps the most hotly-anticipated track on the album. It’s rumoured on deep pop forums that many acts including Dua Lipa were after it, but it wasn’t leaving Alma’s hands for love nor money. Just for that reason, it’s Alma’s personal experiences and belonged solely to her.
“It gave me a lot of confidence to hear that because it’s a risky move. Usually, you want to put out the poppiest ones.”
Miley wasn’t the only misunderstood figurehead to make their way into Alma’s life during this time. Most recently an Alma penned track was chosen as the comeback for the music career of Lindsay Lohan, who “actually just DM’d me on Instagram” after hearing the Miley tracks.
Helping in understanding who Alma is, these two interactions came from “people that are weird ones, but they’re the cool ones for me,” she says, “Miley and Lindsay, they both get criticised a lot, and I love that. I think that’s why they’re interesting, and that’s why they’re heroes for me.”
Billboard recently put together a list of 21 artists who rank among the Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Artists who have yet to win a Grammy in competition. They listed in descending order of where they rank on the GOAT list:
Cyrus has received just one Grammy nomination, when Bangerz (a.k.a., the album where she took a “Wrecking Ball” to her old Hannah Montana persona) landed a 2014 nod for best pop vocal album. Cyrus is just 27, younger than any other solo artist on this list, so there’s still time for her to win a Grammy. GOAT ranking: No. 31.

NPR, a public radio network in the US and available globally, recently ranked Saturday Night Live‘s musical guests from the 45th season. Included in their ranking was Miley’s performance for SNL: Live at Home.
Bathed in red light while sitting aside a fire pit at night, Cyrus belted out Pink Floyd’s 1975 lighter-waver “Wish You Were Here” with the socially distanced accompaniment of guitarist Andrew Wyatt. (The choice of Wyatt — a bestselling pop producer, guitarist and songwriter who’s working with Cyrus on her next album — felt notable, in part because Wyatt has written publicly about his recent battle with COVID-19.)
For a simple set-up recorded under difficult circumstances, Cyrus’ performance did a pretty ingenious job of turning back-porch busking into the stuff of late-night sound stages. It had visual drama: smoke, flames, distinct lighting, moody accompaniment, lavish fashion. But it also served up the umpteenth reminder that Miley Cyrus is a marvelous singer, with vocal — and emotional — range to spare.

Lockdown hasn’t stopped the UK’s best-selling country act from making music in a special collaboration.
The Shires have performed a duet of Miley Cyrus track The Climb with King Calaway. Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire duo Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes teamed up with the multi-national six-piece to sing the brooding power ballad.
The song has been released as part of King Calaway’s ‘Nashville House Band Series’, in which the group have teamed up with top musical acts across the globe to release collaboration video performances recorded and filmed independently of one another.
Ben and Crissie of The Shires, who headlined St Albans festival Meraki last summer, said: “We were so excited when the boys asked us to do a virtual collaboration as we love their voices and their fresh new sound.
“The Climb is also genuinely one of our all-time favourite songs, so it really felt like the stars had aligned when they suggested it.”
