Miley Cyrus will be going back to basics with the release of “Malibu” — her new single, and first original music as a lead artist since 2015 — next Thursday, May 11.
In her candid cover story with Billboard, Miley reveals that the single — named after the California beach community where she currently resides — was written on the way to a taping of The Voice. “I drive myself everywhere, but that day I decided to Uber,” she recalls. “I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car.”
The song, which Miley dubs “controversial in its sweetness,” and which writer John Norris describes as “gimmick-free pop-rock unlike anything she has recorded before,” is said to be about her fiance Liam Hemsworth. “I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song,” Cyrus sings on the track. “But here I am, next to you, the sky so blue, in Malibu.”
“They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam,” Cyrus explains in the story. “So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?”
Read our full cover story here, look out for “Malibu” on May 11, and keep an eye out for its video, co-directed by Cyrus and “We Can’t Stop” collaborator Diane Martel, coming soon.
Miley Cyrus Breaks Silence on Rootsy New Music, Fiance Liam Hemsworth & America: ‘Unity Is What We Need’
Well above California’s Pacific Coast Highway, just off a canyon road, sits a small house with a wooden porch painted in the colors of the Pride flag. The outside is decorated with frog planters, butterfly chairs, a hot-pink pig-shaped grill, sunflowers and daisies. This is Rainbow Land, the boho recording studio whose owner, Miley Cyrus, is on this sunny April afternoon sitting cross-legged in a swivel chair before a sound board, dressed way down with unruly long hair, cutoffs and a vintage tee that reads “Malibu” on the front.
Cyrus — who’s about to play me 10 songs off a new album that promises to (yet again) transform one of the most inimitable, unpredictable careers in recent pop history — is somehow animated and serene at the same time. It’s clear from the way her words tumble forth that she’s breaking a months long self-imposed “media blackout” and eager to unpack her latest thinking on everything from her alienation from hip-hop to engaging with Donald Trump’s supporters.

Miley Cyrus’ Dead Petz phase will be looked upon as one of the weirder, more experimental projects a mainstream pop act has ever recorded. The 23-track album dropped in 2015 and broke brains all across America with its bizarre, psychedelic sound and audacious visuals. Of course, since she worked on the album with The Flaming Lips, who could have expected anything less? For years, Dead Petz wasn’t available to stream on major services like Apple Music and Spotify, but now you can listen to it alongside the rest of Miley’s catalog.
In just two years, Miley Cyrus & her Dead Petz has developed a reputation as a bold and dedicated departure from traditional pop fare: Perhaps its wider availability will help its critical reassessment along.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire! The rumors about Miley Cyrus relaunching in 2017 have grown louder over the last couple of months with mysterious studio pics and a semi-official confirmation from her father. “Looks like it’s time to rock n roll,” Billy Ray Cyrus tweeted in mid-March. “Excited to hear more of the new stuff!!!!! Turn it loose!” That was accompanied by a pic from a new photo shoot, which may or may not turn out to be for the single cover. We should know soon enough because the Bangerzlegend has already signed on for her first performance.
Miley got social media buzzing this morning when she was added to the line-up of Wango Tango in Los Angeles on May 13. Capital FM then added to the online frenzy when they included Miley in their list of coming releases. When you throw in a now-deleted tweet from a Spotify employee about an on-site visit, all signs point to the lead single arriving in April. It will be interesting to see what direction she takes — a more alternative sound a la Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz or a return to the commercial pop of her previous albums. See the mounting evidence for her comeback below.

Kanye West — and his fans — have lately been laser-focused on his upcoming album SWISH, with its predecessor, 2013’s Yeezus, distantly in the rearview. But on Thursday (Jan. 21), we were reminded of one of that album’s most memorable moments, “Black Skinhead,” with the release of the song’s remix.
In addition to an appearance from Kanye, the remix finds Miley Cyrus interpolating Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and Travis Scott delivering some of his favorite ad-libs and a brief outro. Back in 2013, Mike Will Made It revealed to MTV News that Miley and ’Ye hit the studio together to work on the remix following that year’s VMAs.
