Praise Miley Cyrus. The “Wrecking Ball” singer is responsible for one of our new favorite shows, Grace and Frankie, being renewed. Well, that’s according to the Netflix show’s co-creator Marta Kauffman.

“Let me say, it’s so awesome to do a show on Netflix,” Kauffman said at a FYC event in Los Angeles. “Because two and a half weeks after we launched, Miley Cyrus does a tweet about your show, and they call and say, ‘We’d like to do a season two.’ So yes, there is a season two. We have Ted [Sarandos] and Miley to thank.”

See? Praise Miley Cyrus. Her exact tweet, which is exactly what you’d expect Miley Cyrus to tweet in regards to Grace and Frankie, below.

Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Bruce Jenner and Jaden Smith are becoming role models for LGBT youth by being proud and unapologetic when facing the scrutiny of the public.
“Being who you are,” writes Miley Cyrus, “and who you want to be has nothing to do with gender, sexuality, body type, race, or age.” This line is lifted from an op-ed piece Cyrus recently penned entitled ‘Innovators and Dinosaurs’. One can, if curiosity begets them, read it on a new website for The Happy Hippie Foundation, Cyrus’ new non-profit organization supporting homeless Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning youths. 1.6 million youths are made homeless every year in the US, 40% of which identify as being from the LGBTQ aspect of society. These are people who have been discredited, rejected by their loved ones, seen as being tainted and in some 25% of unfortunate cases, abused; physically, sexually, or both. The Happy Hippie Foundation supports strategic programmes that will focus on prevention, immediate needs and awareness around what is happening to so many misunderstood and discredited young people.
“Being a girl isn’t what I hate, its the box that I get put into…”

In a recent phone interview with Sandy Cohen of the Associated Press, Cyrus stated that not all her past relationships were “straight, heterosexual” ones. Cyrus is someone who gets it. She gets that a person cannot be confined by their sexual preference, because it is a trivial human act. Our race is generally divided into male and female. Many people enjoy sexual relationships with people of the same sex, many do not, and many respond to both sexes. This diversity is a simple fact of human nature that is entirely natural, for if it was not, it would not occur. Culturally inherited stereotypes, which one learns at a young age, largely is a variety of compositions of over-generalisation, prejudice, and a refusal to acknowledge observable acts of human nature. These stereotypes are largely irrational and can be dangerous.

In another interview, Cyrus declared that she does not identify with any particular gender. “I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy,” Cyrus explained, “and I think that’s what I had to understand; being a girl isn’t what I hate, its the box that I get put into. The definition is what I don’t like. The box is what I don’t like. It’s the [stereotype of]weakness, and the vulnerability. I don’t want, in my life ever, some prince dude to come save me. I don’t need to be saved. I’m my own person. I’m strong. As you get older I think I just started to celebrate it, because I learned more about what women really are.” Cyrus also nominated Bruce Jenner as her current idol.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC news, Bruce Jenner, the famous former Olympian who was at one time coined ‘the greatest athlete in the world’, but who is now better known as the Kardashians’ stepfather, bravely revealed after years of silence that he is, in fact, transgender. (I say ‘he’, because although Jenner described himself as for all intents and purposes a woman, he has not yet specifically requested that he would like to be known by a new name or female pronouns, so, just like Diane Sawyer maintained throughout their interview, I have also elected to use the male pronoun.)

Roberta Glennon-Rule, a 16-year-old student at Everett High School in Lansing, Michigan, wore a neon tank with the words “LEGALIZE GAY!” on it to school yesterday. Roberta, who describes herself as an active supporter of the LGBT community and a performer at the gay pride festivals in her town, says a security guard told her that her shirt was inappropriate almost as soon as she got to school.   Within five minutes of walking into school, “a security guard told me to take it off,” she told At first, Roberta thought the security guard called out her tank top because the width of its straps violated the dress code. Instead, she says he told her that what it said was offensive. “I was like, ‘Um, I don’t have anything to cover it up, and even if I did, I wouldn’t.’ And I walked away,” Roberta said. Her friends encouraged her to tweet about her experience, so she immediately posted the above tweet with her middle finger up. In response, Miley Cyrus fan groups began DMing her on Twitter and told her they were trying to get Miley to see Roberta’s tweet. They succeeded, and Roberta ended up talking to Miley on the phone within 2.5 hours of posting the tweet. (Miley’s rep confirmed to that Miley spoke to Roberta.) “It was absolutely crazy,” Roberta said. “I’ve been obsessed with her since Hannah Montana.” The night before this all happened, Roberta had actually been on the site for the Happy Hippie Foundation, a nonprofit organization Miley founded to help homeless and LGBTQ youth, looking to buy a sweatshirt. Miley told her she should buy one in every color.

Innovators vs. Dinosaurs
A Happy Hippie op-ed

by Miley Cyrus

In December of last year, Leelah Alcorn, a young transgender girl, committed suicide. It hit me as hard as if I had known her. I felt connected to her. For a year, my focus has been on helping homeless youth, and it was heartbreaking to hear that 40 percent of homeless teens identify as LGBT. The more I learned about what life can be like as a transgender person, the more I realized how especially woven into homelessness that is. Acceptance is a huge step towards eradicating youth homelessness. Being who you are and who you want to be has nothing to do with gender, sexuality, body type, race, or age.

I haven’t been quiet or shy about discrimination issues towards the LGBT community because by alienating people, it makes it harder to work, live in society, have a home, have a family, and can result in homelessness. I wanted to learn more about other challenges in the LGBT community, like violence against transgender women, HIV/AIDS and family condemnation. Anything beautiful on this planet takes time, and with time comes change. That’s why I’m launching the Happy Hippie Foundation — because every life is valuable and we should make sure those who question their value feel protected.

Happy Hippie Support Groups will provide a personal, moderated, safe and affirming experience, no matter where you live. They will be a place for young people to get information and help, reaching people who don’t have access to physical support groups (whether it’s because support groups are not available in their geographic area or because of other barriers, like stigma or fear). Support groups will also connect young people with direct referrals for legal and medical resources, as well as resources for family, schools and religious communities.

Why digital support groups? Because Happy Hippies are committed to helping youth achieve positive outcomes in life and acceptance helps promote self-esteem, well-being, and overall general health for LGBT young people! Experts explain that support groups promote resilience and enable LGBT youth to connect to peers, which counters the stigma they experience on a daily basis.

Every $15 provides digital support groups for one youth for a year. Donate here to help provide critical support services to LGBT youth!
